Mozaic is a nonprofit organization based in Northern Virginia that empowers refugees, asylum seekers, and vulnerable families, women and children in need to thrive, not just survive. Founded in 2016 in response to the Syrian refugee crisis, Mozaic has grown into a trusted community anchor in the DMV region, serving individuals and families from Syria, Afghanistan, and many other countries affected by war, displacement, and hardship. At Mozaic, we believe that refugees are not defined by their struggles but by their resilience, creativity, and potential. Our mission is to walk alongside families as they rebuild their lives, ensuring they have access to the tools, skills, and opportunities needed to achieve dignity, stability, and self-sufficiency. Our Programs Mozaic operates through six interconnected program areas, each designed to address specific needs while working together holistically: Mozaic Care – Providing case management, housing assistance, rental support, hygiene kits, and essential resettlement services to stabilize families in their first years. Mozaic Academy – Offering education for all ages, from ESL and vocational language training to children’s and youth programs that strengthen identity, leadership, and integration. Specialized tracks like RefugeeED and Qabas (spiritual learning) ensure both academic success and cultural continuity. Mozaic Kitchen – Training refugee chefs with culinary skills, food safety licensing preparation, and entrepreneurship tools while creating pathways for income through meal preparation and catering. Refugee Kitchen also provides meals to vulnerable families and seniors through programs like Meals on Wheels. Sewing Studio – A vocational training hub where women and youth learn sewing, embroidery, and textile arts. The program fosters economic empowerment while celebrating cultural heritage, even contributing to a Textile & Refugee Cultural Studies course at George Washington University. Social Lounge – A healing-centered space for families to connect, engage in cultural programming, and access group mental wellness workshops. This hub strengthens resilience, reduces isolation, and builds supportive networks. Mozaic Library (upcoming) – A cultural and educational resource designed to preserve heritage, encourage literacy, and promote lifelong learning. Achievements & Impact Over the years, Mozaic has achieved measurable success while building deep trust within the community: Distributed thousands of meals and hygiene kits, and furnished hundreds of homes for newly resettled families. Supported families with rental assistance, preventing homelessness and ensuring housing stability. Trained refugee chefs and seamstresses, enabling them to generate income and support their families. Hosted youth leadership and identity workshops, empowering the next generation with confidence and skills. Facilitated career development workshops, job fairs, and entrepreneurship support that led to refugees securing employment and launching businesses. Offered mental health counseling and wellness group sessions, addressing trauma and building emotional resilience. Formed a Career Development Committee of seven professionals to guide employment pathways and an Education Committee to ensure programs preserve Muslim identity and empower participants. Partnered with local businesses, women-owned and refugee-owned enterprises, and international organizations including UNHCR. Endorsed the International Medical Graduates Assistance Act (H.R. 3733), which would allow refugee doctors and medical professionals to practice under supervision while completing U.S. licensing. Contributed to the Immigration Film Festival, amplifying refugee voices and building public awareness. Ongoing Challenges Despite significant progress, Mozaic continues to face challenges that require collaboration and support: Unrestricted Funding – Flexible, sustainable resources are urgently needed to cover operational costs and staff expansion. Staffing – Our team is small compared to community needs; additional staff would allow us to scale programs effectively. Volunteer Coordination – Hiring a dedicated volunteer coordinator would maximize impact, provide training, and organize volunteer efforts. Commercial Kitchen Space – A permanent, fully equipped kitchen is needed to expand culinary training and refugee-led catering businesses. Program Space – Growing participation requires expanded classrooms and event space at the Mozaic Center. Vision for the Future Mozaic envisions a community where refugees are fully integrated, economically empowered, and culturally celebrated. Our long-term goals include: Expanding vocational programs in culinary arts, textiles, and career pathways. Launching the Mozaic Library as a cultural and educational hub. Scaling youth and women’s empowerment initiatives. Mozaic is more than an organization—it is a community. Together with volunteers, donors, and partners, we are weaving a true “mosaic” of resilience, dignity, and hope.
