BRAWS partners with 80+ shelters, schools, and community organizations to provide three essential resources to women and girls in need – menstrual supplies, bras, and underwear. Period poverty is a significant but under-recognized problem, with 2 in 5 women in the US struggling to afford menstrual supplies. With limited income, women are placed in the untenable position of being forced to choose between period supplies or other necessities like food. As a result, they go without these items, resulting in negative physical and emotional consequences such as anxiety, infections, social disconnection, and absenteeism from work and school. Both the UN and Human Rights Watch have declared period products as essential for the "health, well-being and full participation of women and girls across the globe." While supplies are frequently requested by disadvantaged women and girls, they are seldom donated, expensive for shelters to provide, and cannot be purchased using SNAP, WIC, TANF, or Medicaid. In response, since 2015 BRAWS has distributed over 6 million period supplies and undergarments to women and girls in need. Those we serve typically are: 1) Receiving supportive housing (DV shelters, emergency shelters, transitional housing); 2) Obtaining social safety net services in school; 3) Receiving support from local food banks; 4) Recovering from substance use disorder; 5) Formerly incarcerated and receiving resources to re-enter society; 6) Transitioning in and out of the foster care system; or 7) Seeking emergency relief. In 2023, we provided essential menstrual supplies and undergarments to more than 33,000 women and girls in the DC metro area. As the only organization in the region exclusively providing period supplies and undergarments to individuals in crisis, we are filling a gap and making a significant impact for women in need. One of our community partners shared, “The dignity these items bring to the client experience is unmeasurable.”
Microsoft partners with Benevity to facilitate its donations. Your points redemption activity will be deducted from your account immediately. Within six weeks after the end of the month in which you redeem your points, Microsoft will make a cash donation based on your redemption to a donor-advised fund at the Benevity UK Online Giving Foundation (OGF), with a recommendation that they make a corresponding grant to your selected nonprofit organization. OGF will take exclusive legal control of Microsoft's donation on your behalf. Donation redemptions are non-refundable. If your chosen nonprofit is not able to receive the donation (for example, if it no longer meets the participation criteria), or if the donation is otherwise undeliverable, the cash donation will be redirected to a nonprofit of Microsoft's choosing. Non-profits are not endorsed by Microsoft.
