While an estimated 100,000 people in Northern Virginia live below the federal poverty line, in reality, the cost of living in this area makes it much harder than the federal poverty line indicates. As many as 24% of households here have inadequate income to meet basic needs without help. The methods used by Food for Others to address these needs are to: 1) provide emergency food directly to clients out of our warehouse a) to all who are referred to us by social service providers and b) to all who qualify based on low-income for the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Commodity Program; 2) provide supplementary food through our Neighborhood Sites Distribution where our volunteers bring food collected at our warehouse and distribute it at 16 sites in low-income neighborhoods, "no questions asked"; 3) provide bulk distributions through our Community Partners program to smaller food pantries, homeless shelters and other community-based organizations for their clients; and 4) provide weekend backpack food to elementary school students who are identified by counselors as at-risk of food insecurity.

Microsoft partners with Benevity to facilitate its donations. Your points redemption activity will be deducted from your account immediately. Within six weeks after the end of the month in which you redeem your points, Microsoft will make a cash donation based on your redemption to a donor-advised fund at the Benevity UK Online Giving Foundation (OGF), with a recommendation that they make a corresponding grant to your selected nonprofit organization. OGF will take exclusive legal control of Microsoft's donation on your behalf. Donation redemptions are non-refundable. If your chosen nonprofit is not able to receive the donation (for example, if it no longer meets the participation criteria), or if the donation is otherwise undeliverable, the cash donation will be redirected to a nonprofit of Microsoft's choosing.
